Some basic electrochemistry is required to understand how dye-sensitized solar cells can produce power. Using some common metal salts and foils, students can make their very own miniature galvanicĀ cells (aka batteries). They will understand all the parts needed to make a complete battery, and be able to relate that knowledge to the components of their solar cells. This activity also introduces the general concepts of oxidation, reduction and electrochemical potential.
